Ol Doinyo Lengai, also known as the “Mountain of God” in Maasai, is Tanzania’s only active volcano and the country’s third-highest peak. The Gregory Rift is located in Tanzania’s Arusha region, just south of nearby Lake Natron. For those looking for a unique challenge, the volcano is a popular hiking destination. It’s one of the steepest hikes I’ve ever done, with 1600m of elevation gain in only five kilometers. The peak has a height of 2,962m and is a geologically interesting destination due to the carbonatite rock derived from magma, which is a unique feature in this region.
The hike takes anywhere from 6 to 10 hours, and the summit attempt often begins in the middle of the night to reach the volcano’s peak. This early start is to enjoy the sunrise from the summit and to avoid the harsh heat of the region, which can often reach 50 degrees Celsius.
Hike Distance: The hike is 11.2 kilometres round trip (return trip)
Hike Duration: This is highly dependent on your speed and can vary greatly due to the steep slope and terrain. Depending on how long you spend at the summit and your hiking pace, the hike can be completed in 6-12 hours.
Our total time was 11 hours, but we spent four hours waiting for good weather and took numerous breaks. Because we were hiking at a reasonable pace, our actual moving time was only 5.5 hours. Our guide told us that he took an 80-year-old up the mountain in 20 hours round trip.
The difficulty of the Hike: Due to the steep incline, this trail is quite difficult. In just five kilometers, you will gain more than 1600 meters in elevation. The hike will take you to 2960m by the time you reach the summit, so be prepared to be out of breath.
Another difficulty factor is that you will most likely start at midnight or early in the morning, making hiking without sleep difficult. It can be cold at the summit, so weather conditions must also be considered. It’s short, so it’s mostly a mental battle, and most people can complete it at their own pace. Give yourself a chance and a “no-quit” attitude, and I’m confident you’ll succeed.
Hike elevation gain: 1600 meters.

The Lemosho Route is widely considered to be the best route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Not too long ago, there were only two main routes used to climb Kilimanjaro – the Marangu (Coca Cola) route and the Machame (Whiskey) route.
The seven-day Machame variation is the ideal schedule for this route. On the 7 day Machame route, the trek from Barranco to Barafu is broken up into two days, allowing for a short day just prior to the summit attempt.
Kilimanjaro climbing 6 days Machame Route, the so-known as “Whiskey” route which means challenging route . Climb Kilimanjaro 6 days, Machame the best route. It is the second most popular and one of the most scenic routes.
The Marangu Route is perhaps the easiest and most comfortable route to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro. The route is well developed and the climb is constant and moderate.
Starts in Arusha, when you arrive on day 1 at your lodge. The climb begins at the remote, northern side of Kilimanjaro, near the Kenyan border. We hike through a true wilderness area towards the jagged Mawenzi Peak.
